Extra
Long French Bread Basket by Sandy Atkinson
Finished measurements: 22" long X 4" wide X 3 1/2" High Material and Cut Pattern: 7/8" flat
reed BASE LAYOUT: Soak the cut pieces and some of the smoked #2 round reed in warm water for a few minutes. Mark the centers of the cut pieces on the wrong side. Lay the tips of the 3-35" pieces under a spoke weight lining up the center marks. Weave 8 of the 16" long pieces above the center marks and 8 below the center marks. Space spokes evenly to form a base of 20 3/4" X 3". Twine three rows with #2 rd smoked reed around the base. Upsett the sides. SIDES: When weaving up the sides, keep the sides straight with nicely rounded corners. Weave two rows
with 1/4" flat oval reed. Weave one row
with 1/2" flat reed. Weave two rows
with 1/4" flat oval. CUT and TUCK: Rewet the top of the basket, then either tuck or cut all spokes. RIMS AND LASHING: Add the inside and outside rims making the overlaps on the long side of the basket, near but not at the corner. For the rim filler, take three very long lengths of #2 round smoked reed and braid them together like you would braid someone's hair. Either have someone hold the ends while you braid, or clothespin the ends together then shut the ends with the clothespin in a drawer. You should do the whole lengths of reed in the braid. Any extra can be used in another basket. Place the 2 heart handles between the two rims on the long side of the basket. Center with the center spoke. Sandwich the braided #2 smoked round reed between the two rims, on top of the copper wire handle lengths. Overlap the ends for about an inch. Single lash on the rims. Make sure you "X" at each of the hearts on the handle. Do any necessary trimming and ENJOY!! Please purchase
