Old Fashioned Butter Rack Baskets by Sandy Atkinson

The butter rack was used many years ago when butter was handmade at home or on the farm. Our new use for it has the rack hanging on the wall for shelf space. It has 3 wooden shelves plus the bottom wire and even the top could be used. Try it in the bathroom for shelves to hold the small baskets for makeup, hair combs and barrettes, and small items for personal use. You could also use it hanging in the kitchen for small items, spices, cooking utensils or whatever. Wouldn't it look cute in the the dining room for candles, matches, any small items?

The pattern given is for a basic basket to fit the rack when all the shelves are spaced equally apart. I suggest that you place your shelves the way you like, then adjust the pattern for height according to how your shelves are aligned. It’s pretty easy, just allow a couple of more inches in the cut length if you need your basket to be a little taller. Check the height as you weave the basket for your shelf height. Add a row or two extra of weaving for more height, or decrease a row or two for a shorter height. This is a good basket to use your scraps up with.

Includes 4 baskets, each base is 7” X 3” X 3 1/2” High

Material and Cut pattern per basket, you will need to make four:
5/8” flat reed, cut 3 pieces 18” long.
5/8" flat reed, cut 7 pieces 14” long.
#2 round reed, natural and smoked or dyed your choice of sizes for weavers up the sides of the basket.
1/2” flat for rim ** 3mm cane for lashing scrap pieces of dyed reed to create the flowers and designs on outside of basket.

Soak the reed in warm water for a few minutes. Mark the centers of the cut pieces on the wrong side. Lay the tips of the 18” long pieces under a spoke weight with the centers lined up. Weave a 14” piece across the center, lining up the marked center. Then weave 3 -14” pieces above and 3 below the center, line up center marks. Base should measure 6 1/4” X 2 1/4”.

Take a long length of #2 round, crimp off center. Place the loop around an under woven spoke on the long side and twine around the base for 2 rows. Rewet and upsett all spokes. Check and make sure the base will fit on the shelf. Adjust if needed.

In start stop fashion, weave up side of basket, using what you have and/or like, creating a pattern. Weave to your pre determined height. Rim with 1/2” flat, use a rim filler of seagrass, dyed reed, jute twine, or your choice. Lash on rim. Do any needed trimming. Be creative with the dyed reed making bows or flowers on one side of basket.
